GOLD AND AIRWAYS.
NEW GUINEA'S PROGRESS. Gold development in New Guinea is in a promising condition according to Mr. L. J. Joubert, who passed through Auckland on Saturday after six years with the Bulolo Gold Dredging Company. Several new companies had been formed and were beginning operations, considerable development having been made. His own company was now operating four dredges and a further one was being put in next year. Gold production had increased and was now a very considerable source of revenue to New Guinea. Bulolo was a thriving town, though an air line was its only connection with the coast. There were 230 whites and 1000 natives living there. They had full modern equipment, including even refrigerators and a talkie plant. Mr. Joubert paid a tribute to New Guinea Airways, Limited, which carried the whole of the equipment and stores to the area from the coast. In all, 13,000 tons had now been carried without damage. The 50 miles from the coast was covered in 40 minutes by the threeengine Junkers 'planes. It was the largest freight service in the world.
