i DAVIS CUP MATCHES. DISAPPOINTING DISPLAY. SOMERVILLE IN THE LEAD. The Davis Cup championship matches advanced another stage on Saturday, and the result puts Somerville in the lead by one point. The ground was hard, but the play all round was disappointing, being markea by too much hard hitting. At Kcmuera Somerville beat Wesley by three goals to one, while University and Grammar Old Bovs played a drawn game of three goals apiece. The Grammar Old Boys made a big recovery, putting on their score alter being three goals down at half-time. At Papatoetoe St. Lulce's in a ragged game beat the local side by six goals to two. Another smart assault by Grammar finished in the goalie kicking Roughton's shot aside. Exciting moments in the circle ended when Watson cleared and the students raced to their opponents' quarter. The effort was shortlived and Grammar soon returned to Varsity's circle, where Forrest-Brown saved a hard shot from Jerrome. 'Varsity again took up the attack and only the fine goalkeeping of Anderson kept the net intact. Play now moved up and down field, rapidly and both sides went close to scoring. A corner to Grammar allowed Roughton to connect and net. 'Varsity 3, Grammar 2. Roughton broke away, outpaced the backs, passed to Twigden, who equalised the score. 'Varsity 3, Grammar 3.
