THE OPTIMIST.
Mark Tapley has a descendant in a farmer who was seen sitting on the roof of his house during the Mississippi (U.S.A.) floods. A neighbour rowed across to pass the time of day. "All your fowls washed away?" he inquired. "Yes," said the owner, "but the ducks can swim." "Fruit trees gone too?" asked the caller. "Yes," admitted the farmer, "but everybody said the crop would be a failure, anyhow." "I see the river s reached above your windows," the neighbour continued. "That's all right," declared the optimist. "Them windows needed washiu'." 1
