PARIS, July 1!>.
In spite of an official ban, civil servants determined to hold a mass demonstration of protest against the reductions in pay, but were circumvented by GOOO mounted and foot police, who were on duty.
Detachments repeatedly charge J the demonstrators, and 500 arrests were made. This restored order early in the evening without any grave incident.
The dimensions of the meeting were automatically reduced by the locking of all underground railway exits. Encounters were never more than scuttles, the police buffeting with gloved hands, and the demonstrators retaliating with their fists.
