SOUTHERN EXCHANGES.
MARKETS STRONGER. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHUECH, this day. The markets were strong at the first caD, and a much firmer tone was evident in the banking section. The fillip provided by the increased Commercial dividend was shown in the prices quoted. Government issues showed little change. Week-end quotations were in most instances. In the banking section Commercial preferences brought £9 17/6 and £9 1,8/6, previous sale locally being £9 11/6. Ordinaries (cum div.) sold at 16/10 and 16/11. E., S. and A.'s, at £5 2/6, were "1/3 up on the previous sale. There was no business in the insurance section. Prices were firm for A.P.A/s,'with buyers at £1 2/.- Nationals had buyers at £1 0/10.. The only sale in loan and agency was a parcel of New Zealand Guarantees at's/10, with further sellers. New Zealand Refrigerating (paids) had business at 19/6. showing a firming -.trend. The demand for Kaiapoi Woollens was strong in anticipation of the balance-sheet. Staples' Brewery had dealings at £1 14/9, and Consolidated- Brick moved to business at 11/3. The previous sale here was at 10/9. The market closed with buyers at 11/2. Maerewhenua, sold last week at Id, had business and buyers at Buyers of King Solomon were at 3/8. Lawson's Plat, at 4d, were a little easier. Maori Gullys, with a reported late sale at 1/3, were unchanged. Buyers of Waihis offered £1 16/8, against £1 16/4 at the close of last week.
