"NO BRAINS."
BEAUTY'S REBUFFS.
"GIRL OF THE GOLDEN REEF." UNREALISED HOPES. (Special.—By Air Mail.) LONDON, May 11. Violet Caldicott—they cal her "the girl of the golden reef" —is 17, the most perfect girl in South Africa, and one of the most disappointed girls in London. She won the first prize in a beauty competition in her home town, Johannesburg. It was no ordinary competition. Charm, athletic prowess and intelligence counted as-much as sparkling eyes and clear skin.
The prize was a jubilee trip to London. Leaving her job in- a Johannesburg office, Violet and her mother came to London for a holiday. And Violet intended to use her attainments to build up an English career. But it just hasn't happened like that at all. A pretty brunette, with sun-tanned skin, now tells the old story which can be endorsed by many an Australian "beauty" winner—a story of disappointment and disillusionment. "I had a good job in Johannesburg in an office. I didn't get the job for my looks; I got it for my intelligence. Then I went in for the competition. It wasn't an ordinary competition. We had to show how we could swim and play tennis. I happened to be farly good at both.
"There were tests for our intelligence and our charm. I jumped at the opportunity of coming to England, and the chance of making a career either in business or. on the films. So far it has been nothing but disappointments. When I go to an employer he sometimes suggests—and sometimes says point blank —'Oh! a beauty queen; you can't be very intelligent.'"
