SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
The Northcote and Birkenhead Amateur Dramatic Societv, under the direction of Mr. Les Watson, staged a performance nf the three-act play, "Homeward Bound," in the Albany Coronation Hall, in aid of the church building fund, for which £.:> was raised. Tho large audience was most appreciative of the efforts of the performers, Mieses Eunice Bell, Vera Faulkner, Blanche Davey, Messrs. Les Watson, Leo O'Malley, Fred Fullbrook, David Lunny, Harold Sinel, and Roy Drummond. • * • • A very enjoyable evening was spent at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Max Judd in honour of Mis* Veronica Gaffney, who is leaving shortly to be married. The evening was spent in dancing, games, and musical items, rendered by Misses E. Haihvood, C. Gaffney, and Mr. Ted. Clarke. During the evening, gifts were opened by Miss V. Gaffney. Among 1 lie Ruesta were: Mesdames W. Hickey, A. Haihvood, K. A. Judd, Misses C. Gaffney, E. Haihvood, J. Barry,- O. Knottoir, R. Judd, K. O'Driscoll, N. Arthur, M. Garland, E. Weavers, M. Hickoy, and P. Gall.
A bon voyage luncheon was held at George Court and Son's in honour of Mr. and Mrs. W. Johnstone, who leave for Sydney to-day. Mrs. George Gladding, sen., acted as hostess, and was assisted by Mrs. W. G. Gladding. Among those present were:—Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Andrew, Mrs. Ivan Andrew, Miss Mary Andrew, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Andrew, Mr. Frank Gladding, Mrs. F. Trenwith, Mrs. T. D. Watson, Mrs. Will Collins, Mrs. A. Johnstone, Mrs. C. H. Reid, Mrs. Howard Hunter, Mrs. Kelly, Mrs.' Mulcahy, Miss Lilian Braithwaite, Miss Lorna Hunter, and Miss Sheila Baker. • * » *
A mother and daughter l-nnquet was successfully held at the Dominion Road Methodist Girls' Club in connection with "Mother's Day." It was given in the form of a radio television evening. Friend Eleanor, of the Friendly Koad, wae the presiding speaker. Features of the evening consisted of physical drill display, chor"3es, games and community singing. During the evening drill badges for the previous year were presented by the Rev. R. B. Tinsley. During supper a toast to fie mothers was proposed by Miss Lucy Crai-r. and suitably responded to by Mrs. Ratcliffe.
There'was a very large gathering at Mr. and Mrs. Ron 'Lovell's residence at To Puke last night, when ;i farewell evening was given to Miss Verna Walsh, who is shortly to be married. There were about seventy people present and a most enjoyable time was spent by everyone present. Dancing was the main feature of the evening, but several competitions were held, the winners proving to be Mies Betty Downs, Miss Mavis Kerr, Mrs. A. Ryburn, Mr. W. Vallance, and Mr. Lemmon. Mr. Lovell was master of ceremonies. An excellent supper was served l>v the hootesp, and during that interval ' Mr. Lemmon presented the bride-to-be with a set of fish knives and forks. During the evening the party was entertained with charades, the performers being Mr. Sharp. Mr. Downs, Mr. Nugent. Mrs. Rvburn, Miss Betty Downs, and Mi.<s Mavis Kerr. Mr. Laurie McDough gave several items on his steel guitar, which were very much enjoyed, while Mr. Matthew Te Hau demonstrated the tap dance. •
