LABOUR CAUCUS.

SELECTING DEPUTY-MAYOR

MILK COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES,

A meeting of the successful Labour candidates for seats on the City Council. Transport Boj.rrt and Hospital Board will lie held to-morrow evening, when many matters pertaining to the policy of Labour will be discussed.

A matter which is arousing interest, and which no doubt will be decided, is that of Labour's nominee for the position of deputy-Mayor. At least three names are being mentioned as possibilities.

The council's representation on the Auckland 'Metropolitan Milk Council is another matter that will not bo overlooked. At present the City Council's representatives arc the chairman, Mr. G, W. Hutchison, and Messrs. S. Takle and 11. P. Burton. Mr. Burton is actually the only one of the three at prosent on the Milk Council. Mr. Hutchison did not stand for re-election, either as Mayor or councillor, and Mr. Takle was defeated. In February last, when the occasion arose for the council to appoint its representatives, several names were submitted, including more than one Labour member, but none of the Labour candidates was appointed.

Mr. Hutchison undertoook that when the new City Council was elected he would tender his appointment for endorsement, and has. since the election, reiterated his attitude. Last Friday ho told the Mil'.; Council that although the Act allowed local bodies to appoint anyone to represent them on the Milk Council, he did not think that it was tho right thing that ho should continue to play the important part of chairman without the now City Council's endorsement. He intended to put in' his resignation, and he would intimate then that he would again accept nomination if that were desired, Labour members expect that his resignation will be submitted at the first meeting of the City Council next Thursday. Neither Mr. Takle nor Mr. Burton gave an undertaking 011 the lines of Mr. Hutchison's, and neither has intimated an intention of submitting his appointment to the new council.

A further matter which is being discussed by those in touch with local body affairs is the election of the chairman of the Transport Board.

ONEHTINGA MAYORALTY. The installation of Mr. J. Park, Mayor of Onehunga, will take place on Wednesday. The ollicial count of the votes cast will be completed to-day.
