HOLLYWOOD IN PERSON.
(By MOLLIE MERRICK.)
Panama is coming back into favour for spring wear in Hollywood, but this year your Panama hat will take on more of an afternoon flair than in former seasons.
Lovely Joan Bennett wears one of tbo newest and smartest straws of this type to be seen. The medium-sized brim slopes clown all around, and the crown is "dented" to stand higher in back, than in front. A grosgrain band in two tones of green tics at one side of the crown, and Miss Bennett wears a green corduroy frock to cany out the colour scheme. Panama straw is very becoming to the sun-tanned complexion, and as Hollywood has no intention of keeping its skin lily white, the vogue for natural straws will undoubtedly continue on into summer.
Adrian accuses us of paying too little attention to the spectator sports costume. This type of frock, which lie describes as being "a bit too dressy for sports wear and a bit too plain for afternoon," lias entered into a new cycle of popularity, Adrian says.
"The spectator sports suit," ho tells you, "should be assembled as carefully if not more carefully than any other part of the wardrobe, and in 1035 women will begin to pay attention to ensembles of this sort, stressing such unimportant items as bags and shoes." Jean Harlow wears a costume that Adrian considers to be in perfect taste for spectator sports occasions. It is of rose beige, lightweight wool, in tweed mixtures. Only the sleeves, which are dolman in type, get away from the strictly tailored lines of the suit, but they serve to introduce the afternoon touch to an otherwise severe frock. At the neckline is a huge clerical collar of .white pique that in a Hat bow iu the back. The bow appears again in the medium-wide belt, and fastens it instead of the usual buckle.
The hat, bag, shoes and "loves for this costume all carry out the rose beige and white combination. The bag is of the same material as the suit, and is trimmed in white pique; the hat is of rose beige straw, with a white pique crown, and the gloves are of white pique. White buck shoes with brown trimmings and medium heels are worn with this ensemble.
Knitted sports suits are always interesting, but this year they take on an added zest if you wear one of the stunning suede coats that are making their bow with the sunny weather. Nothing could be more chic than the green knitted frock worn by Betty Furness, youthful film player, whose slender figure is perfect for such things. The dress is a two-piece afTair with a sweater-like tunic, featuring short puffed sleeves and a neck that may be buttoned or left open as you choose. But the green suede topcoat that goes with this frock is irresistible. Cut with wide lapels and belted on to a slender waistline, this full-length coat is treated as if it were made from tweed. A tinysuede hat, pulled low over the eyes, and a hand-knitted scarf in green, tied high at the throat, make this costume something to be dreamed of, if it can't be achieved.
