SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

At the conclusion of the Dcvonport Borough Council meeting last evening, tho Mayor, Mr. H. F. Meikle, entertained the members of council and staff at supper. The Mayoress and Mrs. Meikle, junior, welcomed the guests. In responding to the Mayor's remarks of welcome, Mr. E. H. Little, deputyMayor, congratulated the council on a successful term of office. The town clerk, Mr. A. E. Wilson, responded on behalf of the staff. Musical items by Mrs. Meikle, junior, concluded the function.

A most enjoyable bridge afternoon was spent at the Farmers' Tea Rooms on Wednesday in aid of the Mount Albert Welfare League. Mrs. E. C. Turner acted as hostess. The prize winners were Mrs. D. Henderson and Mrs. G. Campbell. Those present included: Mesdames N. W. Campbell. E. C. Turner. S. E. Williams, M. C. McHardy, D. Henderson. A. Hay, 'w. Perrv. W. "Gladding, C. Richards, E. Jury, N. Campbell, G. Campbell. M. Graham,'J. Webster. J. C. Duff in. J. T. Price. F. Martyn. H. Lane, D. Marshall, W. Weaver. S. Sheldon, R. D. Cowie and H. S. Griffin.

The temple was tastefully decorated with chrysanthemums on the occasion of the fortnightly social of the Higher Thought Centre, conducted by Mr. and Mrs. on Tuesday night. Competitions, dancing and songs by Miss Verla Hynes and Miss Grace Moore combined to make a very enjoyable programme. Prizes were awarded to Mr£ Gaughan for a girls' names competition, and to Mr. S. Hubbert for an impromptu gazoo orchestra contest, whilst the Monte Carlo was won by Miss C. Hubbert and Mr. Dickens. Supper was provided by the hostesses. Mesdames Green, Deverick, and Hubbert. A vote of thanks was accorded the musicians, Mrs. McCune and Mr. Preston.
