ILLEGAL SWEEPSTAKE.

MAGISTRATE'S WARNING. FREE STATE HOSPITALS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) MORRINSVILLE, Friday. A warning that participation in the Irish Free State Hospitals sweepstake was illegal and that sellers and buyers of tickets were liable to prosecution was given by Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Morrinsville Court to-day, when Charles Howell, a young farmhand, pleaded guilty to'selling tickets in this sweepstake at Morrinsville on January 8, and six well-known residents pleaded guilty to buying tickets from Howell. The magistrate said he thought these were the first prosecutions of this nature, so he would not impose fines. Howell was convicted and ordered to pay costs, 10/, and the other six defendants were convicted and discharged. People before the court in future on similar charges might not receive such leniency, added the magistrate.
