BUTTER AND CHEESE.

English Authority's Tour of Dominions. NEW ZEALAND'S POSITION. SYDNEY, March 28. Observations on the outlook for butter and cheese in the United Kingdom were made by Mr. F. S. Warren, managing director of -J. J. Lonsdale and Co., Ltd., English butter importers, who has arrived from London. He is to investigate tiie various phases of the dairy produce industry in the Dominions, and will make personal contact with exporters. Mi - . Warren, who was director of butter and cheese supplies to the British Government during the war, expressed the opinion that there was little need for local producers to worry too much about the probability of butter restrictions in England. Although it was most difficult to forecast the market very far ahead owing to the disturbed international conditions, he felt justified in saying that the dairy export trade would continue to move to a somewhat higher level. The visitor pointed out that the consumption of butter in the United Kingdom last year was the greatest in the history of the country. The output of margarine had continued to decrease, and for the first time an Empire country —New Zealand—had headed the list of percentages of supplies of butter to the British market. ' New Zealand provided 28 per cent of the total, imports, or 7 per cent above the quantity supplied in 1033. Australian had increased by 24 per cent, equalling 22 per cent of the total supplies. Denmark, with 26 per cent, was down 1 per cent. Ireland showed an increase of 24 per cent. .Mr. Wal'ren said tliat the imports of cheese to Britain in 1934 totalled •149,425 tons, of which New Zealand supplied 101,602 tons, Canada '20,011, and Australia 5722.
