DISCOVERY OF PEPYS' DIARIES.
The discovery of two new Pepys diaries in the Pepys' library of Magdalene College, Cambridge, may necessitate the rewriting of history.
Both diaries are written, in longhand. One deals with Charles ll.'s investigation of the Navy Office when Samuel Pepys was entrusted with its defence, and reveals his daily conferences with the King. The other concerns the days of the Titus Oates plot.
The historical importance of the discovery lies in j the fact that the diaries show- that England was dominated by political intrigue and corruption, and the use of methods similar to those of ' the Chicago gangsters is established beyond doubt.
Entries of minor importance reveal that Pepys was twice robbed by highwaymen, mobbed as a Papist and received a tame lion from Ms admirers.
