THE RETIREMENT OF HOBBS.

The announcement from England that Jack Hobbs has decided to retire from big , cricket serves to show that great athletes came and go. They have their' time of greatness, and. when they grow old it is necessary for them to step aside to make room, for younger players, for in all sports it ie the young men who are the best. Hobbs has been connected with big cricket for thirty years, and for much of that time he was England's best batsman. He has played in Test matches in both England, and Australia, and at his best he was regarded as the greatest batsman in. the world. He made 12 centuries in Test match cricket, which is a record. Hobbs always played the game for the game's sake, and that is what every boy should do when he plays this great summer game.
