STRUCK BY MOTOR CAR.

CROSSING ROAD TO CHURCH.

Knocked down by a motor car near the Comer of Alexandra Avenue and New North Road yesterday morning, Mr. Frederick Cossey, aged 88, of Mountain Road, Mount Albert, suffered injuries from which he died shortly after being admitted to the Auckland Hospital. As was his custom, Mr. Cossey was walking from his home to attend the morning service at the Mount Albert Methodist Church, on the corner of New North Road and Alexandra Avenue, and was . crossing the road to the church when he was struck by a car driven by the Rev. Dr. J. .7. North, of 57, Remuera Road, who was on his way to take a service at Avondale. Mr. Cossey -was thrown ; forward several feet by the impact; and suffered concussion. He was carried- into the church to await the arrival of a St., • John ambulance, which took him to the hospital. Drury Pioneer. Mr. Cossey was an early settler in the Drury district. Born in London, he came to New Zealand at the age of 14 with 'his parents in the ship Persia,

which arrived at Auckland on August 20, IS6O. An uncle of Mr. Cossey', who had arrived in New Zealand as a member of Captain HobsonY bodyguard, had prepared a hut for the family at Drury, and there the family settled, father and son following the trade of shoemakers, in addition to farming their small holdings. Later Mr. Cossey turned his whole attention to farming on some hundred odd acres near the Drury railway station. In 1878 he married,"at Drury, Miss Mary Jane McKinstry, who had come to New Zealand in the ship Viola in 18C5. - .....'

After 50 years of farming Mr. and Mrs. Cossey came to live in Auckland, taking a house in Mount Albert,' where they celebrated their golden wedding on June 9, 1928. Since Mrs. Cossey's death on August 2j, 1932, Mr. Cossey had lived with a son and daughter in Mount Albert. He leaves four sons, Mr. Frederick Cossey (Epsom), Mr. George Cossey (Tamaki), Mr. Norman Cossey (Heme Bay) and Mr. William Cossey (Mount Albert), and one daughter, Mrs A. Angus, of Mount Albert.
