IN PEPYS' TIME.

RULE IN ENGLAND.

Chicago Gangster Methods In Use. REVELATIONS IN NEW DIARIES (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 1 p.m.) LONDON, February 24. The "Sunday Dispatch" says that the discovery of the two new Pepys diaries in the Pepys Library of Magdalene College, Cambridge, will necessitate the rewriting of history.

The diaries show that England was dominated by political intrigue and corruption comparable with Tammany Hall, and the use of methods similar to those of the Chicago gangsters is established beyond doubt.

Lord Shaftesbury's faction fabricated allegations that the Catholics were plotting the overthrow of the Government and to' kill the King. The diaries also clear Pepys from the imputation of treason for which he was sent to the Tower.

An authority on Pepys, Mr. Arthur Bryant, who discovered the diaries, speaking at the Pepys memorial dinner at Cambridge, said that the diaries revealed that he was twice robbed by highwaymen, mobbed as a papist, and received a tame lion from his admirers.

Two diaries were discovered. : Both are written in longhand. One deals with Charles ll.'s investigation of the Navy office when Samuel Pepys was entrusted with its defence, and reveals his daily conferences with the King. The other concerns the days of the Titus Oates plot.
