BOWLING.

CARLTON WINS PENNANT.

HOWICK IN THE FINAL. CHAMPIONSHIP POSITIONS. (By TRUNDLER.) The weather conditions were again very pleasant for bowls on Saturday, the greens haing all the better for the further refreshing rain during the week, and a drying wind had made them fairly keen, although nothing like what they were in January. I'he Mount Eden grounds were a delight to those who attended to see the pennant iinal, the greens showing very little sign of the long spell of dry weather, while the ilower gardens and grass borders suggested that there has been no shortage of water. The Queenstown water weed seems to have taken complete possession of the two larger greens, and if this remarkable plant holds up indefinitely it will solve a lot of problems, for some greens are almost as bare as a table. It is well known that

a similar plant survives the heavy rain-

fall at Westport, where the green has often been described as the best in New Zedand, and the Mount Eden experiment will be watched for the future with increased interest, after the crucial test to which the water weed has been subjected.

Mr. Arthur Dignan, the Mount Eden president, in welcoming the competitors who were taking part in the pennant final on Saturday, and also the many players who were- there to watch the games, thanked the centre executive for the compliment they had paid the club in choosing their green for that important fixture. One could not help thinking, however, that as long as the_ Mount Eden greenkeeper can maintain the excellent sward that greeted the visitors the club will receive this compliment rather frequently. Carlton won in both rinks, but Howick put up a really good fight before being defeated.

The apparent incongruity that the largest club in the Auckland Centre, Carlton, playing 30 rinks in the pennant matches, should meet one of the smallest clubs in the final, Howick, playing only two rinks, is really another justification of the frequent contention that the system gives equal chances to the large and small clubs. Since the present method was first adopted in the 1919-20 season, there have been only two occasions when the clubs competing in the final, after winning their respective sections, had been playing an equal number of rinks, viz., in 1920-21, when Rocky Nook and Balmoral each played ten rinks, and in 1932-33, when Stanley and Helensville each played four. In all the other seasons the larger club submitted to the centre executive its full quota of selected rinks, in the present case 30, and the first two names drawn out of the hat signified the two rinks who had to play the two rinks from Howick. Nobody has been able to suggest a better way whereby the larger club can compete on equal terms with the smaller club, for its two rinks are necessarily of average strength, whereas if the selectors merely picked the strongest two rinks available the assumption is that they would win every time.

The following table of winners and runners-up shows that in the 16 finals since the present system was introduced, the competing clubs have twice played an equal number of rinks in the section rounds, and that in the other 14 seasons the larger and the smaller club have each won seven times. Therein is seen the practical demonstration of the theoretical fairness in the scheme devised so long agri by Mr. T. R. Keesing, now of Sydney, who was then secretary of the Mount Eden Bowling Club. 1920.—Rocky Nook (8). Onehunga (12). 1921.—Rocky Nook (10), Balmoral (10). 1922.—Carlton (12), West End (10). 1923.—Carjton (18), Rocky Nook (10). ■ 1924.—Rocky Nook (10), Epsom (12). 1925.—Rocky Nook (10), Mount Albert (6). 1926.—Papatoetoe (6), Avondale (2). 1927.—Epsom (14), Rocky Nook (10). 1928.—Carlton (20), Ponsonby (12). 1929.—Helensville (2), Rocky Nook (10). 1930.—Helensville *(4), Auckland (14). 1931.—Onehunga (12), Carlton (22). 1932.—Stanley (4), (Mount Albert (10). 1933.—-Stanley (4), Helensville (4). 1934.—Hallyburton Johnstone (4), Carlton (26). 1935.—Carlton (SO), Howick (2). Intending competitors in the Auckland Centre's open pairs tournament, to commence on Tuesday of nest / week, are reminded that entries close this evening. Open club tournaments this week are at Henderson and Mangere on Tuesday, Takapuna on Wednesday, Edendale and Onehunga on Thursday. The open tournament planned for Wednesday at the Auckland green has been cancelled.

The annual reunion of the veteran bowlers will take place at the Auckland green on Thursday, the morning game to start aa soon after 9 o'clock as the rinks can be made up. The annual business meeting will be held during the luncheon adjournment at the pavilion. The qualification for membership is 70 years of age or 21 years a bowler, and those who have become eligible since last year are invited to join.

A private telegram states that the Eotorua pairs tournament was won on Saturday afternoon by F. Firth and R. S. Higginbotham (Henderson). •

Several clubs have nearly found their champion for the season. At Grey Lynn Vice-president T. Walker, the only onelifer, meets L. Donaldson, while Donaldson's famous skip in the Dominion rinks, H. Whittle, is waiting with a bye. St. Helier's. —This year they played in sections, and the respective section winners now meet in the semi-finals and final. L. Russell, the present champion, plays W. Dunn,.and H.. Wright, runner-up last year and champion four years ago for the fourth time, plays J Thompson.

Balmoral—Working "on the automatic draw, L. S. Francis meets the only other two-lifer, W. Denison, four times club champion N. McGaffan gets the bye, and N. McLeod meets B. Bamsey, club champion in 1927, and also Onehunga champion i in 1914. I

Eawhiti.—The bye goes to W. -Chiplin, the only two-lifer, who was club champion iu 1924 and 1927, and has just defeated the present champion, L. N. Thomson, who was also champion in 1930-31-32. The latter now meets J. F. Roberts and J. Haelam meets C. M. Culpin. Edendale. —In the last round Hill beat Jones, both being two-lifers, and Greenwood beat Brownett. As the two-lifers had each had a bye in previous rounds, the bye now gees to Greenwood, so Hill and Jones will have to meet again, a similar happening to what occurred last year, as well as in two other clubs. If Jones beats Hill he will then get the bye, ad he will be at the top of the chart in the automatic draw.

HENDERSON TEAM WINS FINAL. The three-bowl pairs tournament at Rotorua was continued on Saturday afternoon, when the remaining three rounds of post-section play took place in fine weather. As the morning round had eliminated Collins and Pakes, the only surviving local pair, the contest was left to three Auckland pairs, so only one match was played in each round. Results:— Fourth Round.—F. Firth and R. S. Higginbotham (Henderson) 17, v. S. E. Harper and H. Sykes (Rotorua) 14, twolifers; J. Hopwood and C. E. Hardley (West End) a bye. Fifth Round.—Hardley 24, eliminated Sykes 8; Higginbotham a bye. Final.—Higginbotham 17, v. Hardley 15.

The afternoon games were watched by a large crowd of local and visiting spectators, and frequent applause greeted the good shots. The final was specially exciting, as the play was very fine on both 6ides, and it was only the successful driving of Higginbotham that kept down the West End score, ven then Hardley was lying the game when Higginbotham saved the situation by drawing the shot with his last bowl.
