AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

CANTERBURY TITLES. ATTON WINS DISTANCES. DOMINION HURDLES RECORD. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCII, this day. . The Canterbury amateur athletic championships were held on Saturday on a dead track mid a cool wind possibly had some effect on tho standard of performances, which generally were below championship level. The best race was the 220 yards hurdles in which J. D. Nelligan beat the previous champion, E. C. Holder, Westport, in 25 4-os, one-fifth of a second inside New Zealand record. One of the surprises of the meeting was the defeat of Matthews, the New Zealand champion, in the three miles by A. M. Atton, of H.M.S. Diomedo. Atton won by 100 yards. Matthews was probably stale, but Atton's time of 14.42 2-5 was better than Matthews had ever done. Atton had won the mile event on Friday. Tho middle distance racing was disappointing. T. G. Broadway stood out of the quarter mile, which was won by H. C. McCaskey, with D. H. Oldfield second. McCaskey's time was 51 2-ss. Broadway defended his title in the half mile, winning in 2.1 2-5, the slowest time for a Canterbury championship for several years., J. B. MacFarlane retained his 100 yards and 220 yards titles without difficulty. E. C. Young won the 120 yards hurdles in '16 2-ss. A. T. Anderson, who had titood out of the 440 yards flat, won the 440 yards hurdles title again in 57 l-ss, fighting off a strong challenge by J. D. Nelligan. Tho mile walk was won by F. "W. Dukes In 7.26 2-5. The two best performances in the field events were those of N. W. Mulvey, winner of the pole vault at lift Oiin, and T. C. Morrison, winner of the hop, step and jump at 46ft lin.
