SECTIONS UNDER WATER
KAITAIA ISOLATED
Reports received liy the Automobile Association this morning state that all roads north of Whangarei and Dargaville, with the exception of the Wha-ngarei-Russell Eoad are impassable.
Altliougii the weather cleared in the Kaitaia district late yesterday afternoon,' Kaitaia i<s still inaccessible. One bridge near Waimahiaku, immediately, north of the Waipoua forest, is down, as also is another near Waimatenui, between Donnelly's Crossing and Kailioke. The roads through the Mangaliiuka Gorge and through the Victoria Valley, as well as the main road to Wliangaroa, are still blocked. The only route to the far north practicable for cars is by road to "Russell, and thence across the Bay of Islands to Pailiia by pontoon ferry. From Pailiia cars can go by roiul to Mangontii. Tlie mailt road from Auckland to Wellington, via New Plymouth, is open, detours being available by which the damaged bridges can be avoided. Between Te Kuiti and Pio Pio tlie road is under water, but the water is not so deep as to stop cars. The central route, via National Park, is in very bad condition, and, though cars are able to get through by taking long detours, it is not recommended.
From other parts of the province, the association has received word of minor slips and unpleasant travelling conditions, though the roads are still negotiable.
