HOMEWARD BOUND.
BYRD LEAVES ANTARCTIC. NEW YORK, February 10. A wireless message from the Byrd Antarctic expedition's flagship Jacob Ruppert stated: — With 37 live penguins added to the cargo the expedition took formal leave of the Antarctic at 2.55 a.m. on Friday. This vessel and the Bear of Oakland steamed through a thick fog out of the white mouth of Discovery Inlet. Mist swiftly sucked in the tall white barrier cliffs, and that was the last the menibers of the party saw of the continent which for .so long had been their "home. Twenty penguins. were captured in Discovery Inlet and added to the 17 already in captivity. They have been housed in a special refrigerated room on the Jacob Ruppert, equipped with a salt water pool. The voyage from the Bay of Whales to Discovery Inlet was made without incident. At times both ships had to zig-zag their way through streams of ice. A party from the Bear of Oakland landed there to catch the penguins, after which both vessels steamed away on the homeward cruise.
