BOWLING.

THE ROTORUA TOURNEY. Ol*l> CHAMPIONSinPS RECALLED. CLUB AT HAND. (By TRUXDLER.) A welcome sight awaited all the player who do not attend during t lie week ■vvlien they arrived at their respectiv clubs last Saturday, for they found tha a transi'ormation had been effected by th rain of the previous four days. It migh be more correct to say four nights, vor, little actual rain falling during the day whereas during the corresponding wad of last year very heavy rain fell niostl; in daylight, virtually wrecking the Roya Agricultural Show, and causing the bowi ing tournament at Rotorua to be iban doncj; for the first time in 32 yours. Anticipations of Livingstone and eon (Onehunga) being concerned in -tb final of the third Rotorua tournament ii .succession wore more than realised, am as they are both in excellent form thi season, thereby reaching the final in th.' largest four tournaments in the province besides being again well supported at Koto rua by Sutherland and Flowerclay, ..-on gratulations are due to the Carlton mil who defeated them in the final. Little ■Jenkin, Higgott and de Launay const; tute a good team, all but the lead beim the rink who won the Christmas touina mont three seasons ago. and it is a grca record for the club that they supplier tliree of the four rinks who reached thi eemi-finals, the others being the rinks o J. P. Mason and G. R. Hosking. It is rather strange, however, consider the remarkable strength of Carlton and that there are always such a lot com peting that until recently the club's entriei were limited to five rinks, that this is on I) the third win for the club in the 4' Rotorua tournaments conducted cSurtii! the,33 seasons since these popular gather ings started. It is true that Carlton rink; have been runners-up- six times, but ii striking contrast is the clul/s record ii winning the Auckland Centre's Christina! tournament nine times in the 22 year.since the centres were formed, alway: against larger entries than at Rotorua and usually against just as strong com petition, if not stronger. The iuvitatio-n tournament, at Tatirangf commences to-morrow, and as Robertsci and Livingstone have controlled the win ning rink for the last three years, theii progress will again attract the same atten tion as at Rotorua. The open pairs tournament at Rotoruf commences next' Monday, and the ope; pairs of the Auckland Centre commence; on Tuesday, March 5. entries closing or next Monday week, Februauy 25. The annual match between the Auckland and South Auckland Centres will be played at Te Aroha next Saturday. On the following Saturday the final match for the Auckland Centre's pennant will be played, the section winners being Howick and Carlton. The annual gathering of the veteran bowlers, .usually held about the first Tuesday in February, will be held at the Auckland greens on Thursday, February 28. 'The present qualification is 70 years bi age, or 21 years a bowler, and the present president is Mr. M. M. McCallum, svlic confesses that he cannot "yet claim th? former qualification, but'depends on the latter, as he has been playing for 41 years. They used to begin playing bowls very early in those days, as witness the Brookes brothers. Goodness knows when they started, but they must have been long .before the end &£ last century, for Alt", won the..championship of Ponsonby as long ago as 1897, Herb, the Carlton championship. in 1900 and Charlie the Mount Eden championship in 1900 and again in 1902. In the earlier j-ear he followed it up by winning what corresponds with the Auckland Centre's chain pion of ehampions,\ although in those days the competition embraced the whole province. His opponent in the final was 80l Ballantyne (Ponsonby), who had also won the club championsliip the previous year. Bowling has kept the Brookes brother;young, for none of them look- as if they could have been cild enough 40 years ago to take, on what is now regarded as "art olel man's game." Mention of three club championships is a reminder of the death of the.only man who has won the championship of three clubs in Auckland, "Dolph" lEagletoii, one of the • most picturesque identities in Auckland bowling for several decades. Following the*, usual system of playing, at tha club nearest to his residence, be won ' the Devpnpovt championship in 1901 and again in 1903. Moving to the city, he Avon at Carlton in 1907 and then joined Epsom, formed in that season, winning in 1909. For a. long time he has played for Rocky Nook, occupying the presidential chair for the 1927-28 season, but he never managed to pull off the championship of that club. However, his proudest win was at the Sydney Bridge carnival in 1932, where he skipped a rink, and was one of the seven Auckland competitors who helped to make up the 318 entries in the singles. Played on the 'knock-out principle, he was only defeated in thesemifinals of the latter event, and he. was greatly delighted at winning third prize, following the Australian system whereby the two defeated semi-finalists play off. His hearty demeanour will be much missed in Auckland. Quite a different type of member- was recently lost to Carlton by the death of Mr. C. G. McLaughlin, originally a member of the Rocky Xook Club. He never won a fournapient, nor even tried to, but he was a most lovable man, and so endeared himself to the members that although a lot of them did not even know his name, he was known, all over the green as "Dad," in the'second person, or spoken of as "Dear Old Mac," in the third • person. •'• --. This happens to be a notable year in the history of North Island bowling, for the Netv Plymouth Club is celebrating its jubilee by a week's festivities,' commencing on Saturday, March 9. and- a rink tournament starting on the following Monday. The growth of the game has been most peculiar. Probably everyone knows that the parent club of Auckland, founded in 1861 by a number of Scottish colonists who met in the vestry of St. Andrew's "Church, was not only- the first bowling club formed in New Zealand, but also the first outside the British Isles. However, it is perhaps not generally known that 32 years elapsed before Auckland 'was joined by- Carlton and Ponsonby, both formed in 1893,- whereas iu the meantime the game took on in Dunedinat a great rate, starting in 1871. followed by Chriatchurch, starting in 1878, nearly 20 clubs being formed before we had a second chib in Auckland. New Plymouth broke tho isolntion suffered in the North Island by Auckland, the late Mr. .Tames Paul b' ing mainly responsible for founding the club there in 1885. and beginning the amoving growth at this end of the country which soon swept away the predominance of Otago and Canterbury, the present nosition being 201 clubs, with 9913 members in the North Island, and 148 clubs with 5655 members in the South. Club jubilees will now follow in rapid succession, for Wellington and Wanganui followed New Plymouth in 1886. Nanier in 1887. Palmerston North in 1888, Gisborne in ISB9, Hastings in 1890, Thorndon in 1892. and then came the rush of the last decade of last century, Carlton and Ponsonby setting the pace in Auckland, and Newtown in Wellington. The New Plymouth celebrations are therefore of -"tional pfenificance. and warm congratulations will be offered to present and past 'members regnrding the fine record of this progressive club.
