PARTED BY FLAMES.
BROTHERS IN BURNING HOUSE Two young New Plymouth men, separated by a wall of flame in a burning house at Ngamotu Road, Moturoa, on Thursday morning sought eacli other for a few frenzied minutes before leaving, barely in time, with only a few clothes. They were Messrs. J. and L. Fitzpatriek, living in a six-roomed house, owned by their father, Mr. W. H. Fitzpatrick. Despite strenuous efforts by New Plymouth firemen, who fought the flames for over an hour, the house was entirely gutted and its contents destroyed. The alarm was given by Mr. J. Fitzpatrick at 1.20 a.m., and the brigade was quickly on the scene. Eight hundred feet of hose were run out, but as the flames had a good hold when the brigade arrived, it wae some time before any impression could be made. The owner was away on holiday. When the two occupants awoke, the house was full of smoke. They were sleeping in two bedrooms separated by a living room, where it is believed the | fire first broke out. Each thought of warning the other, but could not communicate across a wall of flame and smoke. None of the household effects was saved. _• '
