Flying Scotsman Breaks Record For Britain. NEARLY 100 MILES AN HOUR.' (Received 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, November 30. j j The Flying Scotsman established a British railway record by travelling from King's Cross to Leeds, 180 miles, in j 151 minutes, an average of 74 and a maximum of 941 miles an hour. During the return journey the train attained a < speed of 971 miles an hour, Britain's I greatest passenger train speed, but the average speed was lower. ' The journey was undertaken to test, the steam train against the Diesel- j engined Hamburg Flyer, which did the trip of 178 miles to Berlin in 138 minutes. ! I London and North-Eastern Railway j officials claim that the test proved that j the steam engine has beaten the German; oil burner, considering that the latter runs on a flat track, while the LondonLeeds line has gradiants of up to 1 in 100, with severe speed restrictions in some places.
