BUSES OVERLOADED.
OTAHUHU COMPANY FINED. EXTRA VEHICLES NEEDED. The Passenger Transport Bus Company was prosecuted in the Otahuhu Magistrate's Court yesterday by Inspector T. C. Clissold on two charges of overcrowding. The inspector said that the 5 p.m. bus from Westfield to Auckland was overcrowded on two occasions. Fortyeight passengers were carried in a bus licensed to carry 38, and the other 44 passengers against 34. Mr. Sims, traffic manager for the company, said this was one of the problems of transport companies—the peak load. Workmen at Westfield knocked off at irregular intervals. The overload was carried over very short distances, many of the men getting off at Penrose. It was hard for the drivers to refuse to let men on the bus, as they were anxious to get home.
Mr. Levien said there was no excuse for overloading, as the company was right on the spot and could get over the difficulty by supplying an extra bus. Drivers must be instructed not to allow the bus to be overcrowded. There was no hardship to the men if they had to wait an extra ten minutes for the next bus.
Defendants were fined 30/ on each charge, costs £1.
