BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL.
The Birkenhead Borough Council met last evening. A welcome 011 behalf of the members was extended by Mr. C. E. Campbell to the Mayor, Mr. George Mills, after his recent indisposition. Central Post Office.—The council supported a petition to the PostmasterGeneral, bearing 500 signatures, requesting the erection of a post and telegraph office on the site purchased by the Department some time ago at Highbury Corner. Vacant Seat.—Mr. W. 11. Payne, a former member, was appointed to the vacancy caused by the death of Mr. F. Morris. Harbour Bridge.—The Mayor and Mr. 11. H. Greville were appointed representatives 011 the conference convened by the Mayor of Auckland to consider the position of the Auckland Harbour bridge project.
Rates Collected.—The town clerk, Mr. 11. Kemp, stated that for the half-year ended September 30, the collection of current rates amounted to £2397, besides arrears of £825.
Relief Workers' Pay—Regarding the request by Mr. F. E. Lark that wages be paid to No. 5 scheme workers on the days they finish work, it was decided to continue present arrangements, but to point out that inconvenience to the men could be avoided by obtaining authority forms from the post office to allow wives to collect pay.
Liability Disclaimed. —No action was taken in respect to a claim for 7/11, the cost of a pair of child's shoes, alleged to have been spoiled by tar which had no covering of shingle at the Rosebery Avenue bus stop.
