£1,000,000 LOTTERY.

SUGGESTED FOR N.S.W

MONEY FOR HOSPITALS.

The minimi conference of the Now South Wales Hospitals Association decided last Thursday to ask the Government, through the Minister for Health, for approval for the organising of a £1,000,000 lottery, to be run in conjunction with the State lottery, to raise more money for the upkeep of hospitals. It was stated that the proceeds from (lie State lottery were diminishing, and that unless the prizes were made more attractive the lottery would go out of existence. The president of the association, Mr. 15. J. Kenna, in his report, said it was unfortunate that the State lottery had been curtailed, in view of the fact that more attractive prizes were provided l>v outside or foreign lotteries. As a consequence, much money was being enticed away from the State to the detriment of the hospitals. The Government should be urged to extend the activities of the lottery so that the New South Wales hospitals could obtain the maximum revenue from this source. An Act making hospitals the sole selling agents of share lottery tickets was long overdue. Mr. Kenna said that from one drawing nf the Irish sweepstake the hospitals of Ireland received £557,280. There were 2-104 prizes, value at £1,041,840. In addition. the Government received £185,7(10 from taxation. , There was nothing to stop the Now South Wales Government from launching a £1,000,000 lottery, with £500,000 in prize money. The tickets would have a world-wide sale. The conference carried a motion that the Government should be requested to introduce legislation to enable various hospitals to have the sole right to sell lottery share tickets in their respective areas. Motions were also carried protesting against the "apathy of the Cabinet" towards the lottery, and recommending that the lottery should be increased to compete with those Jin other States, and that hospital boards should be allowed to conduct share ticket syndicates in aid of their hospitals.
