NORTHCOTE,
The Xwthcote Borough Council met last ewniing, the Mayor, Mr. E. Martin, presiding. . Ar Water.—The waterworks engineer, Mr. John Williamson, reported that the reservoir had been cleaned and had been found to be quite clear of any growth on the walls. The surface of Lake Pupuke had remained stationary for the month. Wharf Shelter ._ — A deputation was appointed to wait upon the Auckland Harbour Board in support of the provision of additional shelter on the Auckland ferry jetty. Ex-Hobsonville Workers—A deputation from the local branch of the Unemployed Association, Messrs. H. Digney and W. -J. White, requested preference in any extra work in the borough for four men who had been refused sustenance or relief work, the outcome of the Hobsonville dispute. It was decided to consider the representations at a special meeting next week. MOUNT ROSKILL. The Mount Roskill Road Board met last night, Mr. G. M. McCullough presiding. Building.—The building inspector reported that 70 permits for building and alterations had been issued for a total amount of £ 12,054. This included 21 dwellings of a total value of £10,282. During the same period 47- plumbing permits of the total value of £1152, and IS drainage permits of the total value of £636, had been issued. Rebate on Rates. —When the finances were under discussion Mr. W. H. Thomas remarked that one ratepayer had overpaid the amount owing by him. Mr. G. M. McCullough said the over-payment would be refunded. Ratepayers had been known to add 5 per cent to their rates when forwarding a cheque, instead of deducting that amount as a rebate due on payment of rates within 30 days from the date of demand. No Meter Record.—A ratepayer complained that the board's claim for water meter repairs was unjust, as the meter was damaged on the occasion of the board's transfer to the Onehunga water supply. The waterworks committee reported that this meter had not recorded consumption since prior to April 1, 1929, therefore the allegation that any alteration in water pressure in the year 1932 caused damage to the meter had no bearing on the question. Unemployed Ratepayers.—The board was asked to fall into line with the surrounding local bodies by giving the unemployed ratepayers an extra day's work to help them to pay their rates. The chairman said he did not know the writer of the letter, and could not comply with the request without further information. The letter was received, and no action taken.
