STABLE AND TRACK NOTES
CALIENTE RETURNS. Caliente, who has been racing in Sydney during the last few weeks, returned to Auckland this morning by the Wanganella. VERY FIT HORSE. Horowhenua has returned to Ellerslie after a successful trip to the South Island, where he won the Grange Handicap, one mile, at Oamaru, outstaying the field at the finish, and the President's Handicap, one mile and 100 yards, at Geraldine. This horse has had the racing during the last few months, and though he has yet to show his ability over a mile and a half he is a very likely lightweight prospect in the Mitchelson Cup. . /» LOOKS IMPROVED. Burnish looks to be improved as the result of her efforts at the recent Wanganui meeting. This filly was very mulish at the barrier when she raced in that centre, but once she went away she showed that she still possessed plenty of speed. As a two-year-old last season she was one of the best, and yesterday at Ellerslie she galloped well over six furlongs, and she will only have to go kindly to make her presence felt in her engagements here. APPROACHING .HIS BEST. Kiltowyn is approaching his best again and he is likely to make a good showing in his engagements at Ellerslie. At the last Auckland summer meeting he won the Summer Cup and also the Grandstand Handicap, both mile and a quarter events, and his only race since then was in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie, where he failed to get into a place. Kiltowyn was put aside owing to bleeding, but he seems to have got over this, and he has been going along well in his work at Ellerslie since then. He galloped nicely oyer seven furlongs yesterday morning and could have "improved on his 1.33 3-5.
A GOOD COLT. Spiral has arrived and looks in excellent fettle to carry out his engagements at Ellerslie. He went over a round pleasingly yesterday morning and with another gallop should be quite ready to undertake his task of winning the Mitchelson Cup. Spiral showed good staying ability last season when he won the New Zealand St. Leger Stakes at Wellington, and though beaten by Red Manfred in the Great Northern St. Leger he was only half a length away at the finish. Red Manfred has to give him 71b in the Mitchelson Cup, and he jviU find his task a pretty difficult one. At Wanganui Spiral ran two great races, seeing it was his first appearance this season, and ithat he is a good colt there is no doubt. LAST YEAR'S WINNER. Baroscope won both the principal events at the Taumarunui meeting at Paeroa twelve months ago and then won the Mitchelson Cup at Ellerslie. This season he won the Taumarunui Cup and was second in the President's Handicap on the second day, so that, taking a line through Paeroa, he certainly is right back to his best form. He looks well after his recent racing; in fact, he has not looked better for a long time, and his gallop on the course proper at Ellerslie yesterday morning "was full of merit, for he was more than 40ft out from the rails and completed a mile and a quarter in 2.11 the last seven furlongs in 1.33 2-5. This was a very pleasing effort and his admirers are sure to get a good run with him. GOING WELL. Gay Marigold still impresses by the work she has been doing at Ellerslie and it looks as though it will not be long before she is again at her best. Her effort over six furlongs at Ellerslie yesterday was a very impressive one, and she shaded Versant at the finish. Last season this mare raced most consistently, for in nine starts she was only out of the money twice. She won the Hamilton Handicap, one mile, at Te Rapa, and the Pupuke Plate, nine furlongs, at Takapuna, while she.was placed on five other occasions, including the Flying Handicap at the last spring meeting at Ellerslie (an event she is engaged in on Saturday), Mungatoon beating KiltOwyn by threequarters of a length, with Gay Marigold only a head away. ENGAGED IN GUINEAS. Sporting Blood is likely to turn out a very good three-year-old this season. He looks an improved horse since he raced at Paeroa, where lie was rather unlucky, and with anything like a good run in the Great Northern Guineas lie should be in the firing line at the finish. Last season he was a more than useful two-year-old, winning at both Avondale and Ellerslie, while he ran good races on other courses. His dam, Gazi, does not appear in the Stud Book, hut the name suggests that she is by Gazely, the sire of that good liorse Gazique. Sporting Blood is by Hunting Song, and therefore there should be little doubt about his staying ability. His owner does not think there is much when he has continued his engagement in the New Zealand Cup. Sporting Blood galloped with Burnish and Canopy at Ellerslie yesterday morning over six furlongs and he was finishing on better than the other pair after covering a lot more ground. Sporting Blood should do well this season.
