RATE COLLECTIONS.

NEW LYNN BOROUGH

STRIKING IMPROVEMENT

A striking improvement in the financial condition of New Lynn borough was indicated at last night's meeting the council, when the town clerk, Mr. R. N. Cathie, submitted a comparative statement of the collection of rates and the annual rebate rates for the past three years. The current year's collections totalled £0813. or £2823 more than in the year 1932-33, and £1759 more than in the year 1933-34. The increase was 70 per cent over the 1932-33 collection and 35 per cent over those of 1933-34. A considerable increase in collections was also shown in the arrears of rates. A schedule of income and expenditure showed that the revenue received was £1909 in excess of the expenditure, which was deemed verv satisfactory in view of the present difficult times. It was not anticipated that the excess revenue would be equivalent to this at the end of the financial year. The council congratulated Mr. Cathie and his staff on the results obtained.
