"POVERTY" BAY.
WHAT'S IN A NAME.
MISNOMER ON EAST COAST.
»R, HABROF'S SUGGESTION.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) GISBORNE, this day. The question as to whether the name Poverty Bay should be changed was again raised yesterday, when Dr. A. J. Harrop, representative of the New Zealand University in England, was epcak-
ing at a Rotary luncheon. He suggested that if the district was determined to retain its misnomer the word "Poverty" should be within quotation marks. This, he said, would arouse interest in the minds of those who did not know the history of the name. Gisborne, he added, was a place about which very little was heard and still less known. Dr. Harrop suggested that Aucklanders should make the tour of the Hot Springs district by way of Matamata and Rotorua, and then through the back road to Waikaremoana, then via Morere, Gisborne and Opotiki back to Auckland. The road to Waikaremoana might be improved, but travellers could get over it by instalments, and it was a great scenic route that would pay to advertise. Beaches in the Gisborne district, lie added, were as good as anywhere in New Zealand, but he had never heard of them until he saw them for himself.
