IMPOSING TOWER.
HOUSE FOR TOWN CLOCK,
I . (From Our Own Correspondent.) CAMBRIDGE, Monday. Dismantled when the Post Office tower was'taken down by the Public Works Department, following the Hawke's Bay earthquake about 2J years ago, Cambridge's town clock remained in its cases, stored away until recently, when it was re-erected in the new tower on Jubilee Gardens. The new tower is regarded as one of the most imposing in the Dominion. Built of reinforced concrete, it is 45ft 'high and cost fGGO. ! At the official opening of the tower ' and the starting of the clock by the Mayoress, Mrs. C. H. Priestley, the Mayor traced the history of the demolition of the Post Office tower and the strong opposition, to the action of the Department. He congratulated the architect, Mr. Harold White, of Hamilton, on the pleasing design of the new tower, and also the builders, Messrs.- Speight, Pearce, Nicoll, Days, Ltd., of Cambridge, Other speakers at the opening were Messrs. M. Wells, .chairman of the Power Board, and J. S. Fisher, representing the country districts. The new tower and the clock are illuminated at night, there being lights at the top and down the four grilles on each side.
