TO-DAY IN CHRISTCHURCH. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The markets were firm on 'Change this morning, and a substantial list of sales was recorded. The biggest rise was made in a sale of Government stock, 1955, which reached a new high level for local business at £U3, and the 1946 stock tinned, with dealings at all advance of 2/6. Fewer buyers came in for bank shares, but NewZealand Banks were well held, and little change in rates took place. Further otters for Commercials were made at yesterday's selling price, but Bank of New South Wales showed a slight weakening, with sellers at last sales price. An outstanding feature of an otherwise quiet insurance section was reported business in Mercantile Mutual at £1 4/5, which represented the first sale on the local Exchange in this issue for the last year or two. At the call closing quotations were only 2d apart, with buyers £1 4/3 and sellers staying at the price of reported business. The brewery section was as firm as ever, and for New Zcalands buyers went up to £2 9/11, sellers remaining Id above without business being done. Broken Hill Proprietary changed hands at £2 12/8. with more on offer at Id above. Colonial Sugar had a strong offer of £68 2/6, and a seller came in at 10/ above. Kauri Timber also showed a strengthening tone on buying offers, and Hays, Limited, were sought up to 16/3 without success. Among mining scrip Mossy Creek made a sharp l rise to business at 1/11, closing quotations being %d below and Id above that figure. Waihi was very firm, and could not be bought below £1 15/6.
