ROWING.

AUCKLAND ASSOCIATION.

■ANNUAL MEETING,

CHAMPIONSHIPS ON WHAU

I The forty-seventh annual general meetI ing of the Auckland .Rowing Association was held in the Chamber of Commerce ■ 011 Saturday night. Mr. Geo. Hogan, vicepatron, presided in the opening stages, but upon his election as patron, Mr. Ernetst Davis took the chair. There was a full attendance of delegates. Mr. H. W. Hudson, president, despite his recent illness, appeared for a short time and was accorded a very warm welcome. He had made a point of being present and wanted to know if the clubs would object to owning a whale boat After giving an interesting description ot this type of boat and its value to the clubs, Mr. Hudson stated that he was having prepared a challenge trophy, valued at £50— a model to scale of the St. George's Club whale boat—with the object of introducing competition. lhe boats would all be the same measurements as St. George's and it was a type he telt certain would stand almost any weather. The competition would be open to every club in New Zealand. _ The race must take place upon the appointed day, unless the harbourmaster deemed the "weather i too dangerous. The course suggested i from the eastern tide deflector, around the Bean Hock lighthouse and back to starting point. The trophy is to be the property of the club winning it three years in succession. Points would be given foi seamanship and so forth. Mr. Hogan, m accepting the valuable offer on behalt ot the association, thanked the donor and suggested that the trophy would engender the sport, and it should be known as the Hudson trophy. Mr. Ernest Davis said lie would like to see whale boat racing resuscitated. It would give the sport a smack ot the olu times, when such great public interest was created in the racing. He saw no reason why the club should not- take it up seriously and in order to test the response to the question, he offered to subsidise a quarter of the cost of a whale boat the Auckland, North Shore, Waitemata and West End Clubs may have built. , He left the matter for the consideration of the four clubs. Mr. Hogan trusted that the generous offer of Mr. Davis would be given serious consideration by the clubs, and then returned thanks on behalf of the associaU Mr. W. Walsh (North Shore) stated that the offer would meet with the strong support of his club, which has already shown its keenness by the introduction of the naval whale boat race that has become an annual contest. The .Auckland Association s application for the New Zealand championship regatta is the only one that appears on the N.Z.A.R.A. order paper, and it is felt the championships will be allotted to Auckland. The delegates discussed the question of a course at some length, and it was finally decided that if the application bo granted the regatta be held on the Whan River course at a date if possible not less than ten days after the Hamilton regatta. It was decided to instruct the Auckland delegates at the N.Z.A.R.A. meeting to support the Otago Association's claims for the championship eights on Easter Saturday, 1035.
