FIRST RACE OF THE SEASON

The first event of the 1934-35 yp.cbting season was held on Saturday, when the boats of the Heme Bay Sailing Club competed in two races for cash prizes donated by Mr. J. R. Savory, of San Francisco. The first race, sailed in the club's 12-foot boats, was for seniors, Captain W. Percy in Norena, winning off scratch from the new boat Valarie, built by C. Pliilpot. The junior race brought out eight starters, and Valarie wats ttrst to linisli, but could not concede the handicap of 7m to Waiawa, a new boat of the "Wakatere lOtt class, whose owner, Don Pettlfer, sailed all the way from Narrow Neck, lJevonport. The wind was light and patchy when the seniors started at 2.30 p.m. Hie competitors were: Valarie (C. Philpot), Norena (Captain W. Percy), Siola (R. Simons) and Hiker (A. Percy). The course was from off the Ponsonby wharf, round mark off Curran Street, thence round Pile beacon off Chelsea, mark off Richmond clubhouse and back to the wharf. Valarie moved off with the lead, followed by Norena, Hiker and Siola. On the lead across to the Pile beacon the wind Icll very light, and Norena beat Valarie. Valarie did well by keeping very close inshore, and drew up on Norena and Hiker, eventually replacing the latter and getting verv close to Norena. The finish was: Norena 3h 58m Is; Valarie, 3h 59m 50s; Hiker, 4h 2m 48s. Siola did not finish. As all were on scratch the placings were as they finished : Norena 1, Valarie 2, Iliker 3. Junior Race.—This class, starting at 4 15 p.m., was sent a shorter course, as the wind was light. The starters, thenskippers and handicaps were :—Valarie (Desmond Hurley), scr; Norena (Norman Shaw), l£m; Nancye (Geoff Hodgson), 2i'.m; Siola (Gaith Hughes), sm; Waiawa (Don. I'ettifer), 7m; Hiker (R. Percy), 10m; Koliu (J. Rew), 12m; and Heather (J. Leyland), 14m. Heather was first away, followed by Waiawa, Siola, Nancye, Valarie, Norena, Hiker and Kohu in this order. Valarie soon went into the lead on the beat to the Curran Street mark, with Waiawa, Norena and Nancye next. The finish was:—Valarie, 5h 7m 14s; Waiawa, 5h Sm Is; Norena, oh Oni 50s; Siola, 5h 10m 255: Nancye, Ch 10m 575; Heather. 5h 19m 15s; Hiker, 5h 30m 30s; Kohu. 5h 33m os. Result: Waiawa (D. Pettiferl 1. Heather (J. Leyland) 2, Siola (G. Hughes) o, Nancve (G. Hodgson) 4. slessrs. I. Dennes and W. A. Wilkinson i were in charge of the events.
