WAITAKI DAM.
CLOSING SLUICEWAYS. FLOODS OVER WIDE AREA. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.). OAMARU, this day. The final stage of the completion of the big dam at the Waitaki hydroelectric site is being undertaken to-day, and the closing of the last of the temporary sluiceways is in progress. After these are closed the river will flow through two big permanent sluiceways until the lake is to be filled, which should be very soon.
Rain lias fallen throughout North Otago and southern Canterbury since Monday. About three inches have been recorded and most rivers and streams are flooded. The main south road is impassable at Kakanui, and the north road at Otaio and Pareora. The Waitaki River is not rising appreciably.
