TOWNSHIP AGHAST
THOSE WHO ARE LEFT. Widowed Women and Orphaned Children. PUBLIC'S CONTRIBUTIONS. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 1.30 p.m.) LONDON", September 24. Grcsford is aghast at the extent of the tragedy in the colliery, which was formerly the town's chief source of employment. To-day 2500 miners were told to sign on for the dole. It is estimated that the disaster has widowed 200 and orphaned 800. One man left nine children. The males of several families were completely wiped out. A woman lost four sons and another three. Hundreds to-day watched workmen covering the mainshaft with thousands of bags of cement. It is feared the colliery will burn for weeks and possibly for months} The Irish Free State sweepstake has given £1000 to the local fund. London bookmakers attending a call-over for the Cambridgeshire Handicap contributed £.">OO. Both funds are now approaching £20,000.
