"SMITHY'S" 'PLANE
Risk of Flight Before Arrival
Of Certificate.
DEPARTURE ON TUESDAY? (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph-Copyright) (Received 10 a.ra.l MELBOURNE, Hi is day. The certificate of nil-worthiness not having arrived for Sir Charles Kingsford Smith's Altair racing monoplane, the airman has received a hint from the Civil Aviation headquarters that delicate international complications may arise if he persists in leaving , Australia for England next Tuesday, as lie intends doing, prior to the arrival of the certificate. It has been made flour to him that lie will be liable to restraint and his machine to detention by any country which is a signatory to the International Convention of Air Navigation over which "Smithy" may fly, A later message states that "Smithy" has sent a cable to Mustapha Kenial Pasha seeking permission to fly over Turkey and apologising for any previous transgression. Tlie correspondent of "The Times" at Constantinople, according to a London cable, reports that subject to compliance with certain conditions permission to fly over Turkey will doubtless be freely granted air race competitors, except to airmen who have transgressed Turkish regulations. Presumably Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and Mr. J. A. Mollison will give Turkey a wide berth as they have been forbidden to fly over the country after former landings and non-compliance with regulations.
