SILENT ENGINES.
British Development for Aircraft. INAUDIBLE ABOVE 2500 FEET. LONDON, September 20. The "Daily Mail" says the Air Ministry's test of an aircraft engine silencer shows it to be. so successful that the noise is less than many motor cars make. It is easy to hear conversation in normal tones and the engine is inaudible from the ground when the aeroplane is flying at an altitude of 2;300 feet. Raiders equipped with the device could not bo detected though they might be flying at a speed of 180 miles an hour. If the noise of the air-screw can be as effectively deadened existing aircraft defences will be useless. Silent warplanes could bomb London and return to their base while the defenders still wondered where they were.
