SEA MONSTER HIT

ALARM ON MAUNGANUI INCIDENT NEAR PAPEETE. VESSEL HAS TO GO ASTERN. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. When the steamer Maunganui was about a day out from Papeete she struck a sea monster, causing some alarm and anxiety among passengers. The vessel had to go astern to free herself. Some months ago the Maunganui, ivhile on her way from Papeete to San Francisco, sighted a similar animal, which Mr. Zano Grey, who was ono of the described as 50ft long and iOft across the nose. The ship's doctor says that the animal struck on the present trip was the same one or similar. Mr. Grey first said the monster was a whale, but afterwards said it was not a whale, but a great fish.
