RACING AT WANGANUI

THE SPRING MEETING. . PR O GUAM ME FOB TO-MORROW THE FIELDS REVIEWED. The spring meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club will be held to-morrow and good fields are engaged in the various events. Reports from Wanganui this morning indicate, that if there is no further rain the going will be good. The old system of betting will be in operation—7s per cent and 25 per cent. The Maiden. The programme will open with the Maiden Race, for which sixteen are engaged. Sunee is said to be a promising sort, while Royal after his second to Windward in the Novice Handicap, six furlongs at Trentham, with Hest, who had won the Trial Plate on the opening day, third, will not be neglected. Amante is 6tated to possess a lot of pace, but may not be quite ready, while Harvest Moon ivas second to Peter's Pence at TaranaKi recently, with Colossal third. Note Issue, one of F. Tilley's team, •was third to Synagogue and Sweet Music in the Fitzlierbert Handicap, a fivefurlong event for two-year-olds, at Trentham in January, but has not done much racing since. Flammarion, who is reported to be going well at Foxton, was second to Whyte Melville in the Rangitane Plate, six furlongs, at Manawatu in July, while Reipar waa third to Gallant Kniglit and Count Rous6illion at Marton last week. Recent form points to ROYAL FEAST NOTE ISSUE FLAMMARION. The Hurdles. Emotion is at the head of the Okeliu Hurdles field with 11.2. He won the Trial Hurdles at Ricearton with 9.13 and the following day was beaten by .a head by Brigadore in the Spreydon Hurdles. He should again go well. Esteem won over hurdles at Dannevirke and has been several times placed. Brigadore won well at Riccarton, and a repetition of that form should make him dangerous. Silent Bill scored easily at Marton and should be improved. Ruanui won at New Plymouth and was second to Silent Bill at Marton. Transact finished third in the Styx Hurdles at Ricearton last month, and only for hitting the obstacle at the five-furlong post hard would have been a much tougher proposition at the finish. If he jumps right to-morrow he should be troublesome. War Eagle, who was third at Marton, and Anemometer look the best of the others. A trio that may be fancied are BRIGADORE TRANSACT SILENT BILL. The Putiki Hack. Rust, who has pride of place in the Putiki Hack, won a double at the autumn meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club last February—the Victory Handicap, one mile and 110 yards, and the Okoia Handicap, one mile and a distance. Hest performed well last season, and despite her failure at Marton last week will still have to be respected. Taitoru was fourth in the Waihi Hack, eight furlongs and a half, at New Plymouth recently, but he has not impressed with his track work since, while Hark Forrard showed good form last season. Hukenianu won up to a mile and a quarter at New Plymouth at the beginning of the month, though he was beaten at Marton, where Santoft ran third over a imile and 137 yds to Spearform and Solarium. Headmistress and Sir Nigel may he the beet of the remainder. Those who may be most fancied are

RUST HEST. HEADMISTRESS. The Chief Event. The Marangi Handicap is the chief event of the day. King's Knave and Spiral Lave not done much racing recently, but they are good stayers when at their best. Tiger Gain was second, to Davolo over a mile and a quarter at file Grand National meeting, and he should be hard to beat. Plateau is useful over a middle distance, jind his race at Marton should have improved him. Limbohm finished third in the Winter Cup, while Mercian Prince has shown good form over a mile. Beryl Latour, who was second at Marton, is a possibility• ThoAulk of the money may go on TIGER GAIN PLATEAU SPIRAL. The Seafield Handicap. Orapai won a double at the recent combined Hunt meeting at New Plymouth and is said to have been galloping well since then. King's Knave is engaged in the preceding event, as' well as this race, while Pomp, if he was to do his best, would have a show. Rereatu is accepted for in the Flying Handicap as well a 9 this event, and in whichever he starts he can lie relied upon to go well. Mother Superior was one of the best two-year-olds in the Dominion last season and she will have to be respected. Passion Fruit is again approaching his best, while of the remainder Prolyxo, who was third in the Waihou Handicap to Orapai and The Tiger at New Plymouth, and Korokio appeal most. A preference may be shown for ORAPAI/ MOTHER SUPERIOR REREATU. A Big Field. The largest field of the day is accepted tfor in the Durie Hack Handicap. Hunting Jay is a good sort and performed well at Wellington and Riccarton and is not out of it. Diagano, who is also engaged in the Seafield Handicap, was a very useful hack last season, and at the last meeting at Wanganui ran second in a division of the (Champion Hack Plate. Midian is said to "be looking well, while Pheon and Cyclonic •were both winners' last season. Hest has p. prior engagement, while Hunting Lodge -was successful in sprint events at both Taranaki and Marton recently. Synagogue •was a good two-year-old last season, while Jlevepai was second to Blackman at Marion last week. Leo Colossus was only "beaten by a head by Hunting Lodge at New Plymouth and Windward won the Novice Handicap at Trentham. Whyte Melville was successful over six furlongs nt Manawatu. Ethiop and Canopy seem to be the pick of the others. Some who may be fancied are HUNTING LODGE REREPAT CYCLONIC. The Concluding Event. The day's programme will conclude with the Flying Handicap and the favourites may be CADLAND BURNISH. PIN MONEY. The acceptances are:— 12.30—MAIDEN 3ACE of £80. PROSPECTS OF NOTE ISSUE. (Special to "Star.") WANGANUI, Tuesday. Sunday night's torrential downpour made the tracks very soft yesterday, but. a strong driving wind last night improved the going, which was in good order for the final gallops this morning, though light rain set in again after breakfast and still continues. There is every prospect, however, of the weather clearing before Thursday.

Though Midian has not done much work recently lie looks more solid and u better horse than ever. He has his full share of weight in the Durie Hack, iu which event Hunting .Lodge and Leo Colossus are nicely handicapped. The race should do Midjan good, and he should be hard to beat in the Plate 011 Saturday. In a gallop over six furlongs with Spiral this morning Korokio was pulling hard and putting her old dash into her work for half a mile, but from then on did not go at all kindly. Spiral had to be ridden in the early stages to keep with the mare, but he was finishing on in fine stayle, and he promises to be one of the hardest to beat in the Marangai Handicap. Pomp appears to be as good as ever, and, though he does not usually show ol his best in races 011 the local track, he will bo greatly fancied in the Seafield Handicap if the going is firm. Shu again pleased by the way he shape l over three furlongs in company with Entail. The Hunting Song colt began smartly, while Entail dwelt and was nearly three lengths in the rear when they had settled down. The Posteritv colt was up with Shu in the straight, and they finished together. • Entail was climbing somewhat, while Shu was going very smoothly all the way. The time, 37 4-ss, was very good on the holding course. If he begins well Entail should hold his own with the best in the Debutante Stakes, but it remains to be seen how he will behave at the barrier, as he is highly strung._ Burnish and Canopy both went particularly well in their half-mile gallop. Canopy had a slight advantage until the final stages, when Burnish got up in good style. They registered 50s, which was the best half done on the tracks for some time. Hit Out Well. Lady Ruler hit out well in her gallop with King's Knave over three furlongs, and it is evident that the two-year-old is all the better for her race at Marton. In running six furlongs by himself in 1.10, Hest showed that he is in good form, and must be dangerous in his engagements. Sunee'r'an right away from Amante over the last two furlongs of a five-furlong spin, and it would appear that J. Lowe has a very promising maiden in this gelding. Amante is also in the Maiden, but is hardly ready to run out the five furlongs. Note Issue showed promise last season, and as she has been doing good work at Fordell is likely to make a good showing in the maiden. Peter Jackson looks healthy and well, but will need some racing to wind him up. He was blowing freely after a couple of rounds this morning, with a sprint over the last three furlongs. Messrs. Smith Bros, intend bringing all their team to Wanganui next week, and they will be located here in future. Ruanui was going a bit better than Blue Boy after running six furlongs in 1.19 3-5, his recent racing having apparently done him good. Jumping Better. When scliopled by himself Red Sun shaped very indifferently, but this morning he jumped better than Emotion in a school over five hurdles. Jf Red Sun jumps right on Thursday he should prove too fast for the others in the hurdles. Hukemanu never put a foot wrong in a schooling essay over live hurdles. Cyclonic ajul Passion Fruit arrived last night. Both look very fit, especially the former, who was very eager to go on this morning. « Black Man, who won a hack sprint at Marton, will be sent north for the Waikato Hunt Club meeting next month. Later he will be put to hurdling. Reipar, who is engaged in the maiden on I Thursday, displayed a lot of speed in nis races at Marton last week, and the son of Greyspear should soon win a hack race or two. Legatee, who is to run in the Debutante Stakes, attracted a lot of attention when stripped for the Juvenile Plate at Marton. The Posterity colt is slightly on the "leggy" side, but he impresses as one likely to win before the season is far advanced. Superior had done so well since being put into work again in June that hopes were entertained that the Colossus, filly would run prominently in some of the classic events during the spring. It was thought the racing at New Plymouth would improve her a lot, but her pallops more recently have not been impressive. She is to race in the Flying Handicap and Guineas at Wanganui, but will require to improve a good deal to win a race. Burnish appears to be coming on well, and her prospects of winning a race this week look bright, as she is one that does not do her best on the tracks. She must run a big race in the Flyin.c, though one or two of the others will-have the advantage of having had a race or two recently. On actual track form Pomp and Spiral look the most likely of W. Bayner's team to win this week, though all his charges are well.
