Gustavo made his final appearance in a race at the Otago Hunt Club's meeting last Saturday week, when lie finished on strongly in third place. He will now be retired to the stud. He is a son of Solferiuo, who left hardy horses, of a type that is becoming scarce. LIKELY TO DO BETTER. Although she failed to finish closer than fourth, Rose Ray displayed some promise when she ran in the Opunake Hack Scurry at New Plymouth, and it is expected that she will do better shortly. Rose Ray is a four-year-old by Chief Ruler from Rosie Desmond, hence a half-sister to Mireusonta apd Kiosk. JUVENILES NAMED.

The Gay Shield—Persis filly fn J. M. Buchanan's stable has had the name Persian Queen registered for her. Another addition to the same stable is a five-year-old mare by Illuminate from the Marble Arch mare Freesia. The newcomer is a half-sister to Respirator, but shows a lot more quality than her relative. LEFT FOR SYDNEY. The Hawke's Bay owner-trainer J. A. Hennah left for Sydney by the Murama on Monday with his maiden four-year-old Chief Ruler —Caress gelding Padishah, who is to be raced round the smaller meetings during the next couple of months. The trip is Sir. Hennah's fifteenth to Australia with horses. STILL UNDER TREATMENT. Morehu, who lias been absent from the tracks at Ellerslie through an injury to one of her feet, is still undergoing treatment and may not race .again for some time. This mare was making good progress before the accident occurred, and the halt in her preparation so early in the season is unfortunate for her connections. STILL AT RICCARTON. The report that Royal Limond had left Riccarton under lease to the Waikato trotting trainer C. Moran was premature. He developed slight lameness while racing at the Grand National meeting and the arrangements for a change were cancelled. The gelding will be blistered and given a spell, after which it is hoped that lie will train on to win good hurdle races. WILL SOON BE READY. The three-year-old Elbanor has not been in work long, but he was kep.t ill exercise while spelling through the winter. As a result ho looks well advanced, and the manner in which he moves on the tracks at Riccarton suggests that Mrs. J. Campbell will have him ready to show good form very soon. He raced well enough in the autumn to suggest that lie will be very good this season. DUNEDIN GUINEAS CANDIDATES. Orris and Chidden have been doing a lot of useful work at Riccarton and they s'tou'd be in great order next month for the Dunedin Guineas, this being the race for which Mr. G. Murray Aynsley has been getting tliem ready (says a southern writer). They will bo raced before then, however, as they are engaged in the Novice Stakes at Asliburton, where they are likely to prove very troublesome. DISPLAY WAS SATISFACTORY. Chromodyne, who recently joined R. S. Bagby's stable, in order to be prepared for hurdle racing, was given a trial over four flights of hurdles at Ellerslie yesterday morning. He got in rather close to some of the fences and jumped a bit high, but further schooling should remedy those defects. Taken all round, his display was quite satisfactory and he should eventually develop into a payable proposition over the battens. FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT. Although unlikely to race again, until the-Auckland spring meeting, Versant is hitting out with plenty of freedom in his work and looks very bright and muscular. He was not overraced last' season, but despite the fact he was returned a winner on - four ' occasions and earned £535 in stake money. The results were very encouraging, considering it was his first season on the turf, and if he maintains [ the same rate of progress during the pre-1 •sent term a good future looks assured for/ him.
