(United P.A.—Electric Telegraph-Copyright) (Received 10."0 a.m.) | MELBOU :*X K, this day. j Sir Charles Kingsf >rd Smith states that he has sent dozens of cablegrams to Washington in a fruitless endeavour to accelerate the arrival of particulars of his new Lockheed Altair 'plane, Lady Southern Cross, which are necessary for his participation in the Melbourne Centenary air race. "The time is running short," he says, "and it will be necessary for me to leave within a fortnight or so if I am to compete in the race. If the certificate does not arrive from America I will be unable to compete." According to a message from Washington the Air Commerce Bureau of the Department of Commerce to-day told the Australian Press Association: "No certification has yet been issued tor Sir Charles Kingsforcl Smith's Lockheed. We can give no assurance regarding certification until we have received and investigated the technical data pertaining to this aeroplane. We understand that the Lockheed Company is now preparing the necessary data."
