FREE SPEECH ADVOCATED.

(By Telegraph.'— Press Association.)

DUNEDIN, Monday.

.A conference convened by home science graduates was opened at Dunedin to-': day, nearly 200 delegates from all parts! of the Dominion being present. This is; the first conference of its kind in theDominion, and an indication was given recently by the Director of Education that any recommendations made by the conference would receive favourable consideration. , .. ';

The presidential address was given. by Dr. Elizabeth Gregory, who said it was ■advisable that senior teachers should feel a definite responsibility in the training of the younger graduates. Under the Australian system teachers* did not apply for positions, but went where they were sent.

Dealing with freedom of speech, Dr. Gregory said that too little freedom was given in New Zealand, and she thought ft would be better that opinions should be stated rather than bottled up. In the development of the work in social science, followed by tJie education of the people, lay the only hope for the future, so what could they ; expeet if freedom of speenh and freedom of experimentation were not permitted in social

sciences.

Addresses were given by Professor Strong, dean of the home science faculty. Otago University; Miss E. Ms Reid, home science extension organiser Dr. Ada Paterson, director of school hygiene; and Professor Hercus.

The conference will meet daily until Friday.
