WATER FOR SHIPPING

Approval of the Auckland Harbour Board's proposal to carry out road construction work by unemployed waterside labour at the Eastern reclamation No. 2 under the Unemployment Board's No. 5 scheme was contained in a letter received by the board from the Commissioner of Unemployment at its meeting yesterday afternoon. A letter received from the Harbours Association of New Zealand advised that the twelfth conference of the association would be held at Christchurch in November. The matter of remits to be submitted to the conference was referred to the board in committee. The Auckland and Suburban Local Bodies Labourers' Union asked that the board, if finance permitted, should restore the five per cent cut in wages, as had been done by the Auckland City Council. The request was referred to the board in committee. A recommendation of the board in committee concerning the resurvey of the New Zealand coast, details of which were published in last evening's issue, was adopted without comment. In connection with the offer made by the City Council to reduce the price of water supplied to the board to l/(i per 1000 gallons, provided the board would retail the water to shipping at a price not exceeding 3/ per 1000 gallons, it was decided to reply that the board was willing to reduce the price to 3/G per 1000 gallons. The recommendation of the board.in committee concerning the naming of channels and passages leading to, and inside, the Hauraki Gulf, were adopted. It was decided to advise the Local' Government Loans Board that no objections had been received to the hoard's application for permission to raise a loan of £4200 for unemployment relief. A motion of condolence with the widow and family of the late Mr. J. Gemmell, one of the board's inspectors, was passed. It was stated that Mr. Gemmell had been a loyal servant for 31 years, and had been an inspector since 190 S. The board decided to make a compassionate allowance ■to the late inspector's widow.
