AT THE DANCE.
ODDS-AND ENDS FROM THE COUNTRY.
Tiuuiiarunui, June 11, 1034. Dear Peter Pan, —This week I have decided to settle down and write you a nice, long letter. Usually I just have time to slip in a nolo (that sounds like a weather report), then rush off t.j catch the mailman. But now lam giing to tell you all the news. On Saturday night we had a dance. They are so funny. Everyone within a radius of ten miles comes, i'rom the little boys who can tell by sliding on the floor how much chalk has been used, to the veterans who sit in the corners and gossip about the price of qjEitterfat. But we all have a very happy time, which is the main thing, isn't it? On Sunday we went up to Rangi, which is seven miles away, and coming home we got stuck in the mud. By the time we had pushed the car out it was dark and there we- were ploughing through the mud while' the "river sang below." The roads up. tkeitt' are fearful, Peter Pan; just bridle tracks,. and the people have the "courage to say: "Those are the fine 'roads we pioneers, made." They must think our opinions are very ungrateful, mustn't they? We are thinking of starting a basketball team here, for the winter. I think it would ho very nice, don't you? But I dont think it will go any further, because the people are .too. scattered.. We could not expect anyone to come seven miles for a game of basketball, could we? Please excuse this writing, Peter Pan, hut really it is dreadfully- cold. Everything is frozen and the fog has not lifted yet, although it is 11 o'clock. Well' now, I don't think this letter is going to be very long after all, but I know you will excuse me, Peter Pan, when I truthfully state that I am frozen to the chair. ' I think I'll come up to Auckland. Is it warm up your way? —Best wishes from your loving member, MONICA NAUGHTON.
