CENTENARY AVENUE.
ON GREAT SOUTH ROAD.
PLANTING SCHEME ENDORSED.
The Great South Road Beautifying Society, at its meeting last nitrh't at Otahuhu, approved of Mr. F. IT. Leonard's scheme for an avenue of 100 trees along the Takanhii straight to mark the centenary of Auckland.
The chairman, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, said it was quite possible to get 100 people to sponsor the scheme by contributing the cost of a tree and its protection.
Mi*. Leonard said nurserymen were anxious to contribute to the scheme, and members of the Institute of Horticulture had said they could supply all the totara required. One difficulty would be a supply of spoil.
Some members were of opinion that the roadway should be brought up to the permanent level, and that the cost would be excessive.
The chairman advised members not to look for too much protection for the trees, and said it would be quite safe to forget about permanent levels. The trees would soon grow and hide the depressions on the roadway.
After further discussion it was decided to plant only one kind of the totara. It was decided also to ip.vitc citizens, to contribute 20/, the cost of a tree and its protection, and the society will undertake the planting.
