Qualifying Round of Open Championship. COTTON'S COURSE RECORD 66. (Eccelved 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 25. The first qualifying round of the British open golf championship was decided to-day. Half of the competitors played at the Royal St. George's links, Sandwich, and the remainder at Deal. The. Sandwich scores include: Cotton, GO (a course record); E. and R. Whitcombe, 73; Easterbrook and Jolly, 74; Alliss, Kirkwood (U.S.A.) and Dailey, 75; Shute (U.S.A.), Robson, Twine and Gadd, 76; Dr. Carew-Nott (Australia), and L. Hartley, 79; Ray, 82. At Deal the best rounds were:—D. Martin, 70; Bert Gadd and Bermer, 71; Rodgers, 72; King, Padgham, and C. Whitcombe, 74; Macdonald Smith and Sarazen (both of U.S.A.), 75; Compston, Mitchell and Perry, 76; Bourn, 78; Duncan, 80; Woollam, 82; Havers and Hon. Michael Scott, 83; Wallace, 86.
The windless weather favoured low scores. The critics, and Cotton himself, agree that he did the best round of his career. His 60 is 12 strokes below bogey for the 6770 yds course. Gene Sarazen, the American, is still favourite for this year's championship. Two qualifying rounds are played in the championship, the field being divided between the Sandwich and Deal courses, on each of which they play a round. T. H. Cotton ie one of the young English professionals who has been in the limelight for several years. At present he •ia employed in Belgium. His performance, according to the cable, 12 strokes under the bogey of the course, is an extraordinary one. There are a trio of Whitcome brothers, and on their first round all-appear likely to qualify, giving England a good representation. AT WIMBLEDON. U.S.A. Cup Players Get Through First Rounds.
