NORMA SHEARER SQUINTS!
ANALYSING HER STYLE OF BEAUTY
The return of Norma Shearer in "Riptide," 'written and directed by Edmund Goulding, is of more than passing interest in view of candid statements concerning this noted star. It is true that she has never pretended to be a "great" artist in the category of Garbo or others that might be mentioned, but all unite in admitting that she is one of the most polished and skilful actresses of Hollywood. Although not beautiful in the ordinary sense of the word, she has the ability to give a distinctive grace to any of the heroine roles in which she is cast. Keen observers must have long ago come to the conclusion that Norma presents the suspicion of what is vulgarly known as a squint, and an English critic of pictures must be charged for first making public that impression. The fact, however, is all the more tribute to her artistry, in which the beautifully cut and tailored clothes she wears in order to offset the peculiar nature of her slim figure is further compliment. The truth is that she has an extraordinary attractive personality and vivaciousness which are entirely natural and spontaneous. Her walk and the way she uses her hands are an object lesson in deportment, not only to spectators, but to fellow actresses. It is predicted that "Riptide" will captivate for its great directing and
acting, ia which Herbert Marshall and Robert Montgomery have valuable parts Interesting to many will be the fact that in. this production the famous _ M ra - Patrick Campbell makes her talkingpicture debut, and almost predominates. This performance won her a film contract.
