HISTORIC CHURCH.
FUTURE OF ST. ANDREW'S. CONGREGATION TO DECIDE. A congregation meeting of members, friends and adherents of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church has been called for next Thursday evening to discuss tli-3 future of the mother Presbyterian church of Auckland, the position' being that unless the present financial position can be improved, . the church cannot continue. The Auckland Presbytery recently set up a special commission to consider the city charges of St. James', St. Andrew's and Knox Churches. The commission met the members of St. Andrew's Church Court and a full and frank discussion on the future of the church took place.
A proposal was outlined by the members of the St. Andrew's Church Court that tliev be allowed to negotiate with Scots Church, Sydney, with the view of securing the ministers who are now coming from England to fill Scots Church pulpit for periods of six months, to extend their itinerary to Auckland for a similar term, and if this were not possible, it was proposed that St. Andrew's Court deal direct with tiie Home authorities in an endeavour to secure, if possible, a suitable man for a period of six months or more.
The proposal was favourably reported by the special committee to presbytery, wlio agreed not to put any obstacle in tho way in furthering the scheme, providing that suflicient guarantee be obtained.
The future of old St. Andrew's will depend 011 tho decision of tho meeting 011 Thursday evening.
