TWO FINES FOR THEFT.

ALLEGED OPIUM SMOKING.

A Chinese market gardener, Ah Kong, aged 40, appeared in the Police Court before Mr. K. Iv. Hunt, tS.Mthis morning charged with being found without lawful excuse on premises at 10S, Hobson Street when they were being used for the smoking of opium. When asked to plead he intimated that he did not understand. lie was remanded until Tuesday. The theft of a parcel of meat, valued ;it 12/6, tlio property ot Ah Wee, was admitted by Ernest Rutherford, aged 45, a labourer. Sub-Inspector Scott said that the meat* was taken from a butcher's cart at Pan mure last evening. The Chinese saw the meat being stolen and took it from accused. Rutherford said he was drunk at the time and did not remember much about it. He was trying to get away to a relief camp and it was a long time since he had been in trouble. A fine of £1, in default seven days', was imposed. "Drink is your trouble," said tin magistrate to Eugene Patrick Cocney, aged 41, described as a chemist and labourer, who admitted stealing a bottle of sedative tablets valued at 1/, and assaulting a shop assistant. The police inspector stated that last evening accused was seen to take a bottle of tablets from a Queen Street shop. When an assistant attempted to hold hiiu accused struck him in the left eye. Accused was partially under the influence of liquor at the time. Cooney informed the magistrate that he was out of work and was trying to get a soldier's pension. He had never been before the Court on such a charge before, he said, drink being his only trouble. On th? first charge accused was fined £1, in default seven days', and he was convicted and discharged on the assault charge.
